One of the worst companies I've ever worked for actually laid me off just a week ago. I had transferred last year from a company owned store to a new location that only had an agent in the area. Let me tell you, what a difference that makes. When I arrived on the scene I was explained some of the problems there were having and asked if I could fix them or at least had some suggestions for helping. I listened and was excited by the opportunity to turn around an office that was in desperate help both financially and professionally. For the first few weeks I observed the practices and procedures and decided on what changes had to be made.
Upon bringing the suggestions to the owners (who by the way are all family), I had some resistance. I couldn't believe that they knew the problems (a ton of money being wasted), but continued to hesitate on taking action. Slowly and painfully we made progress. You know the old line, take two steps forward, one step back well that is how I've felt for an entire year. Struggling always to do what is right and financially sound while fighting with the owners who were about to go bankrupt.
Not only was this company making bad financial decisions but they hired employees who didn't respect them, had no education or training. At first I was disgusted over some of the actions that I witnessed and even expressed my anger for allowing it to continue without consequences. Over time my team of employees did complete their goals, we reduced the amount of errors, increased the customer service level and reduced the amount of fees being accumulated from before I started.
Yet, some things just couldn't be changed, they were out of my control. Some of those actions came out of an atmosphere filled with family employees, deceit and back stabbing. Never had I been in an atmosphere where farting, burping and cursing like a sailor was accepted as good business practices. In your head you have a visual image of men working in this office but you would be wrong, all women besides the owners. Women who would think it was funny to walk through the office blowing steam from their rear ends on their way to the copier. Or burping loudly while others were on the phone with a customer. Rude wouldn't you say. Though if you said anything, like I couldn't help but doing, I gained the nickname "June Cleaver". I guess it could of been worse but because I had morals I received slack and jokes behind my back.
Even worse than the farting, burping and cursing in the office was the professional
communication that went on between employees and customers. Countless times the owners would start to go off on a tyrant using profanities loudly while employees were on the phone with the customers. It was also laughed off when several of the employees couldn't write emails correctly, type in both upper and lower case or refused to use spell check. I can't tell you how many emails I've read with a sentence like "i know you are having an isue". Doesn't that just scream that you are dealing with someone who is professional and educated?
As if these office quirks were not enough to push someone over the edge, they would not fire the employees that continued to cost them thousands of dollars. One in particular mistake is still costing them today with a total amount of over a hundred grand. Only family can have those errors and keep their position. Errors that are made from not doing the job properly, coming in under the influence of medication and plain laziness.
The irony in all of this is they do lay off the ones who make them money, go above and beyond their job and provide excellent customer service. The reason this is the worst company to work for is they have their priorities backwards. They believe in family even when family is stabbing them and draining their blood. They squash any type of motivation because it is seen as being better than others or knowing more than they do. And in the end, they will be left with what they have chosen to surround themselves with rude employees with no regard for how they present themselves to one another or to the customer.
